Hello,

We obtained clarity during our onsite visit process that all B standards must be met prior to going out on the doctoral experiential.

I don’t believe that it has to be finished “before” fieldwork.  Just that the B-standards can’t be met by FW.  Otherwise all the programs that have at least one level II fieldwork in the middle couldn’t do that – and those have all passed accreditation.

Hello,

I appreciate this conversation. These conversations have  made the water muddier for me. It never occurred to me all standards and didactic course work needs to done before fieldwork. If informed literally  FW I and II, would follow all didactic coursework and lead directly into the doctoral experiential during which students would complete the Capstone.

I find this pedagogically illogical.

Capstone, as far as I know, is the term we are now supposed to be using for what used to be called the “experiential component”.  So that’s how I was using it.  When the students are actually completing the implementing and final write up (although planning would certainly occur earlier in the program.

Hello all.

Could you please clarify what you mean by capstone in your curriculum?  We completed accreditation last October under the current standards and my understanding is that the new standards would not be active until 2020.  The new standards appear to substitute the word “capstone” for the level III doctoral experiential component but we refer to capstone as the research project that meets the current B.8.0. scholarship standards.  We are revamping our line of research courses and plan to change the titles to capstone but from the conversation below this would create confusion and perhaps the appearance of non-compliance.  I would appreciate any input or clarification on this issue.  Thank you.

No, some programs have students finish with some didactic work.  It’s just that the B-standards can’t be met through fieldwork experiences.  In the OTD, it may be that the capstone gets completed last, though.

To add another layer to this question. Does all didactic coursework need to be completed prior to fieldwork?  We are wanting students to participate in fieldwork prior to our research course.

Patty:

This is correct that all B standards must be completed prior to the capstone. B Standards relate to the didactic portion of the curriculum that are completed prior to fieldwork and capstone.

Patty,

I was under the impression that you could not use activities from the capstone experience to meet B standards as all B standards must be met before the capstone experience. I may be mistaken and hope to hear from others as well.  I am working off of draft three, which states.

The individual 14-week capstone experience must be started on completion of all coursework and Level II fieldwork and completion of preparatory activities.

Hello,

We are finalizing the curriculum for self study and  designed the scholarly component  to have B.1.6, D.1.8  interact.  The design is to have the "evaluate and Implement" portion of B.1.6 to be carried out, written up, and disseminatedduring the Doctoral experiential.  Our Capstone assignments are done early in Semester 4 so the students will have 4 semesters of research classes to prepare, complete a needs assessment, look at alternatives, design, etc.

Has anyone had experience with this design? I have spoken with Neil and with the New Director, and both are unclear as to the acceptability of this model. Any feedback from those of you who have gone through accreditation is appreciated.

Thanks,

Patty
