You offer a concise summary of the recent events, however I have to
respectfully disagree with your assessment that "The resulting outcry
was from the membership of occupational therapy professionals as they

did not actively ENGAGE in the process/discussion does not mean there
was not an active effort to engage them by the BOD and others over the
past 10 years. Also, a large component of the "outcry" was fueled by

I am troubled by some of the tone of this discussion. In looking at
history, the OTD mandate decision was made by relatively small groups
including the AOTA Board and ACOTE. While the AOTA Board is elected by
the membership, ACOTE is not. The resulting outcry was from the
membership of occupational therapy professionals as they had not been
actively brought into the discussion. Amy Lamb as AOTA President formed
a task force whose charge was to get information and perspectives from
the membership. It then went to the RA, our profession=E2=80=99s representa=

elective body who made its decision to maintain dual entry into the

articulation of how AOTA and ACOTE will work together and make

From your response it appears that folks on the list serv just want to
do an autopsy of the mandate and the fall out? In which case it is a
fine idea. I think context of individual institutions are so varied with
some having to see state approval which is an extensive process. I can
share my situation. I always was against all entry-level requiring an
OTD idea; my intent was to keep Masters as long as possible; once
dual-option was proposed there was no question of sun setting the
Masters.
The rationale is as follows:
1. Despite a successful accreditation of our OTD program, I continue
to get 4X as many applicants wanting to do Masters. In terms of revenue
I can have a good size cohort of MSOT students.
2. OTD cohorts are limited to 18 in our program until we get a sense
of the workload involved in producing meaningful capstone experiences
and community capacity for said capstones.
3. This gives our students the option to transition at the end of the
first year to move over to OTD if they are at the required academic
standing and are able to meet the rigors and workload expectations of
the OTD.
Finally I think we ought to be cognizant of external forces and student
debt crisis. OT salaries are stagnant in many parts of the country. The
healthcare industry appears to be cost cutting where ever possible.
There is some rumblings of a health care bubble burst, etc. In this
regard state schools are at an

Of course you should ask! We should always have healthy and robust
conversations regarding topics of concern. =E2=98=BA I posted the =
original
questions to find out if others were concerned about the cost exacted by
this professional and public dust up. It appears to me that many want
to have a conversation about the results of the RA vote. Hundreds of
programs are told for years that a certain thing is imminent and to make
preparations for a 2027 hard deadline, then the RA says =E2=80=9Cjust =
kidding=E2=80=9D.=20
I think we ought to bear witness to the cost of that vote. Thus, we are
collecting data.

Dare I ask what is the point of this Qualtrics survey? Is it just a
curiosity or are folks still hoping to influence the entry-level degree
option? As I have noted many time on this forum until and unless a sound
rationale is given for OTD as a single entry point, it is best not to
consider that it is an option for now. Personally I think we ought to
let this issue rest for a while and individual programs make decisions
based on what works best for your institutions' vision, mission, etc.

Good afternoon everyone.
Is anyone collecting data during this time of transition regarding the
following:
1. How many MOT programs did not begin the transition to OTD and
waited for the RA vote?
2. How many MOT programs began the transition process and will
withdraw applications voluntarily?
3. How many MOT programs began the transition process and will
withdraw applications by direction of their university/college?
4. If an MOT program withdrew voluntarily or by direction of their
university, did you reduce faculty?
5. How much funding did your school invest in the transition
process?
6. How many personnel hours did your program invest in the
transition process?
7. How many MOT programs are proceeding with the transition to
OTD?
If no one is collecting the data, should we collect this data? Should
we aggregate the results in some meaningful way? Maybe none of the
questions above are applicable. I just remember in Louisville how many
program directors were upset about the output of resources for something
they were told was required. Thoughts?
