We feel your pain. In Louisiana, ours are set to start their first Level II on May 18th. We are now under a "stay at home" order until April 30th, but it may continue. At present our University is not letting us plan for our May 18th start date, but even if they will; we don't know if facilities will let our students come. We are a bridge program so our students are all over the US. If we don't start the first Level II by the first of June, then our second one will be delayed and our students won't be able to graduate until May instead of December. Our other big concern is that even if they complete their second FW shortly after the December date, since degrees won't be conferred until May, NBCOT won't release their scores and so their licenses and start of work would be delayed. The trickle effect is awful! They are done with their classroom work in May so if they do not go out in May, they will have to delay graduation a semester. We are in a hard hit area (NJ) where we have had many cancellations. I am not sure places will be able/ready to accept students even if we delay the start to mid-June. I am waiting on guidance from our institution. Our students are supposed to start on May 4. We have not yet had any cancellations, so we hate to pass that up. At the same time, I question the safety, as well as the readiness of our students to begin. Our Plan B is to teach some classes this summer, and then send them out on FW II in the fall. Of course, we will need to get this approved by our school's curriculum committee. I look forward to hearing about what others are doing. The students were supposed to start today but since Rush has a restriction on student clinical rotations right now we were hoping to push them back until the end of June. Our Dean is strongly advising against this and reconfiguring the curriculum. Because it's towards the end of the program it's hard to rearrange too much so it is resulting in the students graduating a semester later. This has been a huge disappointment to the students (and faculty). Our Level II's are scheduled to start May 11th. As many institutions are making decisions to put coursework online, I am interested in hearing how your institutions are handling fieldwork and overall clinical placements. Our institution is deciding if we are going to allow onsite clinical experiences for our health related programs. On one side, if a facility is still willing to take a student, we do not want to miss that opportunity and think it could provide an incredible experience for the student. On the other hand, we are concerned about the liability of still allowing students to go to clinical sites. Also, with many areas moving towards stay at home orders, students are not necessarily considered essential personnel in most circumstances. I want to thank everyone in advance for you thoughts on this as we explore the impact of this decision. Be Well, Kate Kate E.
