In our program, we have two levels of teacher evaluation. Our university uses a standard student rating of teaching survey that every instructor needs to use. Untenured faculty have to use it for every course, tenured faculty have to use it for 50% of their classes. Untentured faculty also have classroom observations from observers of their choosing so that helps to balance the feedback of their teaching. Within the program, the students provide feedback for every course, every semester. They rank how well the learning objectives were met and have an opportunity to provide specific feedback about the course and teaching practices. This level feedback is very helpful as we tell the students that we make course changes based on their feedback. We also discuss with the them the difference of constructive feedback vs. criticism.

Subject: [OT-PD List - AOTA] - Use of student survey / course evaluations

Hello colleagues,

Lately, there has been a lot of discussion at our university about eliminating course evaluations by students as they may be prone to bias, racism, and sexism. I am writing to see if other institutions use student surveys / course evaluations. If used, I am curious to hear how the data is being used by the institution and department, i.e. for rank and tenure decisions, faculty development, accreditation reports, etc. I appreciate your input.

In community,

Lynne
