Thank you Shannon for your insight. As I just replied to Neil I cannot be more excited about a valid fieldwork evaluation tool based on research.

Subject: [AFWCC List - AOTA] - The New FWPE

Hello fellow AFWCs!

I have been monitoring the list serv and was asked to respond to a several concerns. My response represents both my experience on the FWPE transition workgroup as well as an advocate for a low cost option for OT programs to rise to industry standards in student clinical performance evaluation tools. With that being said, I recognize and value that change is difficult -

1. Industry standards: As you likely know clinical programs all generally have some sort of measure to determine student skill sets. As AOTA took on the next steps to update and validate the new tool, part of the process included rising to industry standards. One of our closest professional alignments is with PT, so an investigation into their tool was completed. The cost for the PT & PTA evaluation tool is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than OT & OTA. The most recent cost was captured at an annual cost of:

PT programs: $1750

PTA programs: $1200

AOTA did investigate using the same platform as PT programs, but all AFWCs on the transition team advocated for a lower cost solution - understanding (prior to the pandemic) the challenge the cost would have on programs. Several cloud based data collection systems were considered and the lowest cost option with the highest value and alignment with desired features was accepted. It was no easy task to find a good fit cost wise, but it was important that AOTA find a solution that rose to the current standards of our colleagues in practice. We advocate for ourselves to be validated and appreciated as a skilled profession, transitioning to a valid, data based online tool allows us to capture significant data that we have never had before.

2. Valid Tool: AOTA invested a significant amount of funds to the development, validation and transition of a new FWPE for our OT & OTA programs. As Neil stated before, $100K was spent on just these steps alone. Your fellow colleagues spent enormous time and resources in this tool's development. The process was extensive and reflected a collaboration of programs, educators and faculty across the nation. Evidence regarding the new tool will be published soon in AJOT - I look forward to seeing the fantastic work of the team that validated this tool.

So... with that said, it is important to recognize that very thing: this tool was validated by research. It took YEARS to complete. So, while I understand the response to create an alternative (and, yes sometimes we need them for alt placements anyhow), what cannot be reproduced quickly is a valid tool on fieldwork student performance. Considering the current climate in student advocacy on educational experiences, using a valid tool becomes even more valued, particularly in appeal or legal situations.

3. ACOTE Standards: If your program considers transitioning away from the AOTA FWPE, the program will have to document and submit this change to ACOTE. Remember that if you aren't using it after Sept 2020, you may have curriculum changes and supporting documents to reconsider.

4. Window into the Tool: I can share my experience with the tool's development so you might have insight into what to expect. The platform will be hosted by an outside vendor - this means, there is a HELP DESK to help you. Yay! If you use EXXAT (or similar) you will no longer be able to use the eval feature, as you will not have the ability to purchase the copyrighted PDF (like before). This is a change that I will have to navigate, so I get it... it's different. The platform will connect you to your student & site info; with individualized, secured links for eval submission (FERPA). Other features will be shared as AOTA continues to launch the platform, but I am hopeful this small tidbit helps.

Change is hard, but as AFWCs, and EVEN more importantly OTs & OTAs, change and adaptation is our STRENGTH. :-)

Most sincerely,

Shannon
