Tim, You bring forward important considerations which are important to address. If history repeats itself (similar to prospective payment system), I'm afraid the future for dwindling applications is real. With the reality that we lost several confirmed students before the start of the summer semester due to the pandemic based on their foresight a job may not be waiting after their finish their program, is an additional layer to the puzzle. Therefore, with the additional piece regarding the changing job outlook could also directly impact all our programs. Hello all I agree it is still a little too early to tell but so far our applications are consistent with last year. With that said, you all should be worried. This has been an issue we have been getting warned about for years indirectly. The number of unique applicants (not applications) is plateauing. The number of OT programs is increasing exponentially and the number of seats in existing OT programs is continuing to grow. Right now, if I remember the numbers correctly, we are seating around 70% of all applicants to OT programs nationally and this percentage is growing each year. This spring we had 163 accredited OT programs in the nation and 109 applicant programs (whose seats are not even available yet). Once these seats become available we will be pushing the 100% mark quickly. Combine this with the upcoming dip in high school graduates, with the subsequent dip in undergraduate enrollment, and it does not paint a good picture for applications in the near future. I think it could be because there were issues with those applicants waiting until the last minute, and not being able to get in their observation hours or taking/retaking the GRE because of quarantine. I have read many articles where the changes due to COVID-19 have caused some students to change their plans or to delay them. I will not begin to worry until next year?! Good luck, Kelly L. We start our Fall semester in mid-July, and last year I had more applicants than I do at this point in time. Wondering if it is unique to my institution or a trend to be concerned about.
