Our OT faculty each advise 10 MSOT students, but we also have to advise undergraduate Bachelor Health Science students. Does anyone else have responsibility to advise students outside of your department? Please use caution. Thank you, Patti. Always interesting to learn how others do things. Our students are highly diverse and mostly non-traditional since our program is a non-traditional weekend format. Our students range from COTAs fairly fresh out of OTA school, to new graduates from our institution’s undergraduate degree programs, new graduates from other institutions, to adults for whom OT is a 2nd (3rd or 4th) career with multiple degrees and grandkids. The advising goes much deeper than courses and grades, so a bit heavier than our counterparts in the undergraduate side of the institution for whom advising is mostly about course selection for degrees. We have 3 cohorts of 30 students. The professional advising is really light because there are no electives and all students move through as a cohort. The main advising we do with them is in regards to professional behaviors or grades. Our largest time advising is spent on advising students who are interested in applying to the program. It comes in waves. On the average, when things are low, we each typically advise/consult/ review transcripts on about 3-5 students per week. During periods when interest is high or getting close to an application period, we could each advise up to 15-20 per week. Fortunately, those are not as frequent. This email was sent from an external sender. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. In an average class we have 1 teacher per 34-36 students. Labs have 17-18 students each. All labs have one main teacher, but may have a TA depending on the nature of the lab. Faculty serve as advisors or approximately 15 students across the 3 cohorts (so about 5 per cohort), but generally advising is light as we only have 1 elective in the program and relatively few students who struggle much. At this time we only have an MOT program. Workload will increase as we move to having an entry OTD in addition. I am doing a quick survey on behalf of my faculty to ascertain where we stand in comparison to others related to advising loads and number of students each faculty member is responsible for instructing and evaluating in their courses. I know that some programs are structured into TBL or PBL for smaller groups, but in an average class or lab, how many students would your faculty be responsible for per course and per term? What is your average advising load per core faculty member? Ours, with one position down, is currently 22 for 100% teaching faculty.
