Good morning,

All of our course grades are entered as a letter grade. Students using VA benefits are required to have a letter grade in all coursework. P/F coursework is not covered (except for during COVID-19 waivers).

The program I used to chair also changed the FW I to a grade for the same reasons Pam. I would be interested to understand what the reasoning is for having the option.

Hello.

We do not allow any courses to be Pass/Fail any longer. We used to have our Level I FW Seminar as a P/F, but with all of the actual didactic work vs. Level I FW time, it did not make sense that all of their coursework did not count toward their GPA. A lot of students complained that their hard work did not seemingly count for anything by being P/F unless they earned an F. The only "course" that remains P/F is Level II FW since there is no way to control or standardize the scores students receive from their Fieldwork Educators and provide an accurate correlation to a letter grade.

At our institution, per policy across all levels of coursework, Pass does not have any effect on someone's GPA. I am aware that some schools automatically count a Pass as if it is an A, which I personally believe artificially inflates a student's GPA. I, too, am curious about the policies, along with the rationales, of other programs that do have P/F for more than Level II FW.

Have an amazing day!

Hello Colleagues,

We do not have an option for students to elect to take a class as pass or fail vs a grade. I am very interested in other programs' policies. I do not think our program will change to pass/fail soon as we require students to achieve an 83 on each assignment. I suppose an 83 would be a pass, and an 82 is a fail.
I think potentially that a pass/fail score could lead some students not to work hard to get an A as it is not an option. So potentially less learning... or more.

Thoughtfully, Jayne

Dear Program Chairs and Directors,

Do any of you have a policy allowing for a specific number of courses in your program to be taken by students with a pass/no pass option instead of a grade? While we do have some pass/no pass labs for all students, we are exploring the possibility of allowing students to choose a pass/no pass option for some additional number of classes.
