1. We do not teach dry needling
2. We do not plan to include this in the curriculum. I asked one of our faculty who serves on the state association as one of the government relations reps and he told me that the topic has come up in Iowa, but that OT did not plan on including dry needling in the scope of practice.

Hello Program Directors,

On behalf of the AOTA Commission on Practice, I am inquiring whether the topic of “dry needling” is taught in your respective curricula.
AOTA has been receiving inquiries from members about AOTA’s position on the topic/procedure. Per Chuck Wilmarth, a few states have adopted interpretative language that effectively integrates the procedure as covered within those states’ scope of practice. Meanwhile OT and non-OT stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding the level of entry-level preparation to enable safe and effective delivery of the procedure.

That leads to the question, what are programs teaching (or not teaching)?

1.       Does your program teach dry needling? If so, to what extent? (The more specific, the better – i.e., hours, mode, etc)

2.       If not, do you plan to include this in your curriculum?
