We do not teach dry needling (just acupuncture by those who are not certified in acupuncture) to OT students and do not plan to include it in future courses.

The AMA has a strong position against dry needling.

Subject: [OT-PD List - AOTA] - Dry Needling

Hello Program Directors,

On behalf of the AOTA Commission on Practice, I am inquiring whether the topic of “dry needling” is taught in your respective curricula.
AOTA has been receiving inquiries from members about AOTA’s position on the topic/procedure. Per Chuck Wilmarth, a few states have adopted interpretative language that effectively integrates the procedure as covered within those states’ scope of practice. Meanwhile OT and non-OT stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding the level of entry-level preparation to enable safe and effective delivery of the procedure.

That leads to the question, what are programs teaching (or not teaching)?

1. Does your program teach dry needling? If so, to what extent? (The more specific, the better – i.e., hours, mode, etc)

2. If not, do you plan to include this in your curriculum?

Sal
