Thank you everyone- your feedback and experiences have been very helpful. We are not in agreement with this move, but space is always an issue- I appreciate the responses.

We moved into a new building last summer, the faculty all have private offices with adjuncts meant to share hotel station in the staff area with open cubicles. The adjuncts instead gravitate to unscheduled conference rooms, for quiet and productivity (not to mention the privacy in advising students. Staff have gone to using head phones to try and block out some of the distractions. It has been a challenge and adjustment for all. I would highly recommend against having open cubicles for faculty and to think about the ramifications for staff.

Yes, agree with all opposed to open offices—during planned moves, departments on our campus were successful in maintaining private office space especially due to advising, IRB security requirements etc.

We thought about doing this but decided such a set up could interfere too much with tasks requiring concentration (research, grading, reading) because of noise, phone calls requiring privacy, and students or staff requiring more unscheduled meetings with faculty/supervisors. Also there were concerns about securing work items, IRB issues, and personal habits of others that may be disruptive.

So we ended up having smaller private offices.

Hello everyone,

We are in the midst of discussing new space and the idea of open office space has been discussed as a possible option. With open office space, there would be rooms for private advising of students. I believe they are thinking something similar to cubicle space. I am wondering if any of your programs or other areas in your schools use open office space and if so, how does it work? If you have been down this road and changed your minds, I would also like to hear about that. Thank you for your help!
