In terms of generating revenue, students sitting a course (or FW "course") essentially provide revenue to support faculty salary. In some cases, graduate student enrollment (head count) is what indicates revenue, regardless of the number of credits the student takes. In some situations a full-time FW for 12 weeks may equal a full quarter or semester of tuition. Obviously it is not a dollar-to-dollar formula, but the revenue from FW essentially helps to cover the salary for the AFWC and adm assistant for FW and the database and other support services for FW. It is not as though we are stashing funds away into "deep pockets." We all know this but we need to be ready to bring this information into the discussion. --Lou Ann Lou Ann Griswold, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA Associate Professor & Department Chair Occupational Therapy Department University of New Hampshire louann.griswold@unh.edu 603.862.3416 ________________________________________ From: ot-pd@aotalists.org <ot-pd@aotalists.org> on behalf of AOTA ot-pd List <ot-pd@aotalists.org> Sent: Thursday, April 5, 2018 5:50 PM To: ot-pd@aotalists.org Subject: Re: [OT-PD List - AOTA] - RE: Compensation for OTD onsite experiential mentors? Dear Colleagues, I agree with not paying sites for fieldwork, just based on tradition, but we're charging students from 6 to 9 credits/placement, based on a very recent list discussion. That can add up to thousands and thousands of dollars per student per placement. It's no wonder some facilities think there are deep pockets from which to draw their cut. This is a complex issue and may be yet another reason for us to consider some very different models for fieldwork training in the future. Kathy Katherine M. Thank you for adding this to the meeting agenda. I, too, am concerned about the “slippery slope” of paying for fieldwork placements. If one site starts getting paid, all of the sites will expect to be paid in the future. I think we should also send a message to AOTA that we don’t appreciate Genesis Rehab as a major sponsor of the Annual Conference, as they are a major force in the “pay for fieldwork” movement. We should only allow Annual Conference sponsors who truly support our profession. In my mind, Genesis does not qualify. I understand that in markets saturated with OT programs this is becoming more common; however, it is a slippery slope. This cost will ultimately, directly or indirectly, get passed onto the students. The cost of education is already rising and this will quickly become a significant factor in cost. I have heard and understand the arguments that sites have made regarding why they feel they should be compensated, but I also think they overlook the tangible and intangible benefits of having students. Currently, our program has had the luxury of not having to deal with this. A few sites have asked and we have said no or just stopped using them. I do know this is a luxury not afforded to all though. Not sure I have good answers for you Holly but I do think this is worth more conversation. I know it has come up in the past but to me this is a good topic for an ALC meeting and for PDs to have some level of consensus on. Best wishes everyone, Tim Timothy J. Hi All, I would love to discuss this issue at the meeting in Salt Lake. I am concerned if we start offering "extras" or compensation for FW educators and for OTD capstone experience mentors we will be competing in a very different way. Our students give back to educators and programs by bringing new ideas, new programs, new assessments, etc. I fear that we are beginning down a very slippery slope if we start paying or compensating in a monetary way. It is not the therapists who will necessarily benefit but the corporations. Offering in-services would benefit the therapists. Hopefully this discussion can be added to our agenda somewhere. --Lou Ann Lou Ann Griswold, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA Associate Professor & Department Chair Occupational Therapy Department University of New Hampshire louann.griswold@unh.edu<mailto:louann.griswold@unh.edu> 603.862.3416 ________________________________ From: ot-pd@aotalists.org<mailto:ot-pd@aotalists.org> <ot-pd@aotalists.org<mailto:ot-pd@aotalists.org>> on behalf of AOTA ot-pd List <ot-pd@aotalists.org<mailto:ot-pd@aotalists.org>> Sent: Wednesday, April 4, 2018 11:30 AM To: ot-pd@aotalists.org<mailto:ot-pd@aotalists.org> Subject: [OT-PD List - AOTA] - Compensation for OTD onsite experiential mentors? Caution - External Email ________________________________ Hi Everyone In trying to properly plan for resources for an entry-level OTD program – It was just brought to my attention that some OTD programs are compensating the onsite experiential mentor with a weekly/monthly stipends. I understand that this experience is very time consuming for the mentor – 14-16 weeks is quite a while as well. What are others thoughts about this? It caught me off guard as I was not planning on budgeting resources for this but I guess it does not surprise me as I know some school compensate fieldwork educators for Level II FW. Looking forward to hearing the thoughts of others on this topic.
